The short answer: WhatsApp’s Translate only translates messages that are already in the chat. It can’t turn what you type into another language. Your phone or an app can: on Android, type your message, drag the Swift Translate bubble onto it, check the translation and tap Send. On iPhone, tap Translate on Swift Translate Keyboard. Both work in over 100 languages, in WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business.
Writing in another language is not the same as changing WhatsApp’s language
Many guides answer a different question: how to change the language of WhatsApp’s own menus. That only changes the words on WhatsApp’s buttons, not the language your messages are sent in.
- To change WhatsApp’s menus: on Android, tap ⋮ > Settings > App Language if you see it; otherwise WhatsApp follows your phone’s language. On iPhone, WhatsApp follows your iPhone’s language.
- To send a message in another language: use one of the ways below.
Send a WhatsApp message in another language on Android
- Type your message in your own language in WhatsApp’s message box.
- Drag the Swift Translate bubble onto your text.
- Check the translation on the preview card, then tap Send, or tap Edit to change it.
The message goes out in the language you chose for them. To let the other person see your own words too, turn on Include original text in Swift Translate’s Settings.
When they answer, drag the bubble onto their message and a translation card appears next to the text, in your language. Tap the card to see the original and the translation together.
Send a WhatsApp message in another language on iPhone
With Swift Translate Keyboard
- Type your message in WhatsApp’s message box.
- Switch to Swift Translate Keyboard and tap Translate.
- Your text changes to the language you chose for them. Tap Send in WhatsApp.
Tap Edit to bring your own words back. To read their answer, copy it and tap Paste on the keyboard.
With the iPhone’s own Translate
- Type your message, then select the text.
- Tap Translate, check the languages, then tap Replace with Translation.
This is Apple’s feature, not WhatsApp’s. It covers fewer languages, and not every app supports it.
Other ways to write in another language
| Option | Where | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Swift Translate bubble | Android, any app | Over 100 languages; preview before you send |
| Swift Translate Keyboard | iPhone, any app | Over 100 languages; Edit brings your words back |
| Gboard’s Translate | Android, as you type | Translates as you type; switch it off to type normally again |
| Samsung’s chat translation | Galaxy phones with Galaxy AI | Translates in the message box on supported phones |
| iPhone’s Replace with Translation | iPhone | Apple’s language list; select the text first |
| Meta AI in WhatsApp | Where Meta AI is available | Ask it to translate, then copy its answer into the chat |
| Copy and paste from a translator app | Any phone | Works, but switching apps for every message gets slow |
Tips for writing to someone in another language
- Keep sentences short. One idea per sentence translates much better than a long paragraph.
- Skip slang and jokes. They often come out wrong, or as nothing at all.
- Check the preview. If a word looks odd, change your sentence and translate again.
- Write names and numbers clearly. Dates, times, prices and addresses are where mistakes cost most.
- Tell them you’re using a translator. People are patient with odd wording once they know.
FAQ
Can WhatsApp translate my message before I send it?
Not with its Translate. WhatsApp’s Translate works on messages already in the chat, and its writing help changes the tone, not the language. On Android, drag the Swift Translate bubble onto your typed text. On iPhone, tap Translate on Swift Translate Keyboard.
How do I type in English and send in Spanish on WhatsApp?
Choose Spanish as their language in Swift Translate. Then type in English and drag the bubble onto your text on Android, or tap Translate on Swift Translate Keyboard on iPhone. The message goes out in Spanish.
Does the other person see my original message?
No, they see the translation. If you want them to see your own words too, turn on Include original text in Swift Translate’s Settings.
Does this work in WhatsApp groups and WhatsApp Business?
Yes. The bubble and the keyboard work in group chats and in the WhatsApp Business app. See WhatsApp Business translation.
How do I change WhatsApp’s language?
On Android, tap ⋮ > Settings > App Language if you see it; otherwise WhatsApp uses your phone’s language. On iPhone, WhatsApp uses your iPhone’s language. This changes WhatsApp’s menus, not the language you send messages in.
