ChatGPT Translator: How to Translate With ChatGPT for Free

How to use ChatGPT as a translator for free: ChatGPT Translate, prompts, voice, photos and PDFs, privacy, and what to use inside WhatsApp and other apps.

The short answer: For quick text, open ChatGPT Translate at chatgpt.com/translate. It’s free, and it translates typed text without an account. When you need a certain tone or an explanation, ask in a normal ChatGPT chat (“Translate this into Spanish and keep it friendly”). To translate a spoken conversation, ask ChatGPT Voice to interpret for you. What ChatGPT can’t do is translate text where it already is, such as a message in WhatsApp or a comment on Instagram. For that, drag Swift Translate’s floating bubble onto the text, and a translation card appears next to it.

We make Swift Translate, so we’ll be clear about where each tool fits. This guide is about ChatGPT first. The facts come from each company’s own pages and help center, checked in October 2026. We didn’t compare translation quality, so nothing here judges it.

How to use ChatGPT Translate

ChatGPT Translate is OpenAI’s translation page. It looks like a classic translator: one box for your text and one for the translation.

  1. Open chatgpt.com/translate in a web browser, on your phone or your computer.
  2. Leave the first language on Detect language, or pick the language of your text.
  3. Pick the language you want to translate into. The arrows between the two languages swap them.
  4. Type or paste your text. The translation appears as you type, with no button to press.
  5. Copy the translation, or tap the speaker button to hear it.

Under the boxes are three cards: Make it sound more fluent, Make it professional and Explain it like I’m five. Each one opens a regular ChatGPT chat with your text and that request, so you can keep asking questions there.

OpenAI says the page covers 40+ languages. Its list also has regional versions, such as Portuguese (Brazil) and Portuguese (Portugal). For texts longer than 8,000 characters, the page asks you to log in. It also has a usage limit: when you reach it, the page asks you to try again later.

How to translate in a ChatGPT chat

A chat has no special translation mode. You ask, the same way you would ask a person. Unlike a translation page, a chat lets you explain what you need. These six tips help:

  1. Name the language and the region. “Translate this into Brazilian Portuguese” or “into Mexican Spanish”. Words and politeness differ between countries.
  2. Say who it’s for and the tone you want. “Translate this for my landlord. Keep it polite and short.”
  3. Give the context. “This is a message from a coworker about a delivery problem.” The same words can mean different things in different situations.
  4. Ask it to explain, not only translate. “This is from a friend in Mexico. Translate it into English and explain any slang.”
  5. Protect what must not change. “Keep the names, prices and product codes exactly as they are.”
  6. Ask for changes. “Make it shorter”, “make it more polite” or “say it more naturally”. You can also ask for two or three other ways to say it.

Photos and screenshots

Tap + in the chat, choose Add photos & files, pick the picture and ask ChatGPT to translate the text in it. You can also paste a screenshot into the chat. This works on the free plan, with limits.

OpenAI says ChatGPT reads text in non-Latin alphabets, such as Japanese and Korean, less well, and that it may misread rotated or upside-down text. OpenAI suggests making small text larger, so crop the photo close to the text.

PDFs and other documents

Use the same button: tap +, choose Add photos & files and attach the PDF, Word file (DOCX) or text file. Then ask ChatGPT to translate it. OpenAI’s help center says free users can upload 3 files a day, and that OpenAI may lower this at busy times. Uploading audio files needs a paid plan.

If you paste a very long text, ChatGPT turns it into an attached file. OpenAI’s pricing page says the free plan can work with about 12 pages of text at a time. So translate a long document in parts, and check each part.

How to use ChatGPT Voice as a live interpreter

You can ask ChatGPT Voice to translate a conversation, and it keeps translating until you tell it to stop. There is no special mode to turn on. You start a voice chat and ask.

  1. Open the ChatGPT app or chatgpt.com, and tap the Voice icon in the message bar. Allow the microphone.
  2. Say who you are talking to and which languages: “Please be my interpreter. I speak English. The person with me speaks Portuguese. Translate everything I say into Portuguese and everything they say into English, until I tell you to stop.”
  3. Talk in turns, and give ChatGPT time to finish each translation.

Keep these limits in mind:

  • OpenAI says ChatGPT’s Live voice is built mainly for one-on-one conversation. It isn’t yet made for several speakers, and it may answer when people talk to each other instead of to ChatGPT.
  • OpenAI also says that in some languages, the voice may have a non-native accent or be less fluent.
  • On the free plan, voice use is limited, and OpenAI says the limits may change.

Is it safe to paste private messages into ChatGPT?

What you translate can be stored and, on some plans, used for training. Here is what OpenAI says about it:

  • Your chats may be used to train OpenAI’s models. On personal plans (Free, Plus and Pro), this is on by default. To turn it off on the web, go to Settings > Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. In the app, open the sidebar, tap your profile icon, then tap Data controls.
  • Logged out, too. Without an account, ChatGPT Translate says: “Chats may be reviewed and used to improve our AI models.” You can switch the same setting off in Settings while logged out. The choice is saved in that browser.
  • Rating an answer counts. Even with the setting off, a thumbs up or thumbs down can let OpenAI train on the whole conversation.
  • Temporary chats aren’t used for training and don’t appear in your history. Choose Temporary when you start a new chat. OpenAI may still keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
  • Voice recordings are kept with the chat for 30 days. They aren’t used for training unless you turn on Include your audio recordings.

Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces aren’t used for training by default. Whatever your plan, don’t paste passwords, ID numbers or private documents you wouldn’t want stored.

Where ChatGPT stops

ChatGPT works on the text you bring to it. Everyday translation often needs something else.

  • It’s a separate place. To read a WhatsApp message, you copy it, switch to ChatGPT and paste it. To answer, you copy ChatGPT’s translation of your reply, switch back and paste it. That’s fine once. In a conversation, you do it for every message.
  • It can’t translate text in place on your screen. ChatGPT doesn’t translate the messages in your WhatsApp or Instagram chats, or the comments under a video, where you read them.
  • Free use has limits. Text chats are unlimited on the free plan, but voice, uploads and the translation page have usage limits.
  • It can make mistakes. OpenAI’s help pages say: “ChatGPT can make mistakes. Check important information before relying on it.” For legal, medical or official papers, ask a professional translator.

Translate inside your other apps with Swift Translate

If most of your translating happens in chats, comments and posts, copying each one into ChatGPT takes time. Swift Translate works where the text is:

  • On Android, a floating bubble stays on your screen. Drag it onto a message, a comment or a post, and a translation card appears next to it, in your language. It covers over 100 languages, and it detects the original language for you.
  • Reply in their language. Type your answer in your own language first. Then drag the bubble onto what you wrote, check the translation and send it. It goes out in the language you chose for that person.
  • Chat mode translates WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business and Instagram direct messages in a panel. New messages are translated as they arrive while the panel is open.
  • On iPhone, Swift Translate Keyboard translates what you type before you send it. Copy a message and tap Paste on the keyboard to read it in your language.

You can use both. Use ChatGPT when you want to rework a text or understand it in depth, and the bubble for the messages and comments you see all day. The bubble also works in the ChatGPT app, so you can use ChatGPT in your own language.

FAQ

Is the ChatGPT translator free?

Yes. ChatGPT Translate at chatgpt.com/translate translates typed text for free, without an account. Texts over 8,000 characters need you to log in, and the page has a usage limit. In a regular chat, text chats are unlimited on the free plan, while voice and uploads are limited.

How many languages can ChatGPT translate?

OpenAI says ChatGPT Translate covers 40+ languages, including regional versions such as Brazilian and European Portuguese. For ChatGPT chats and Voice, OpenAI doesn’t publish a list. It names translating between languages as one of ChatGPT’s core tasks, and says its live voice is designed mainly for the most widely used languages.

Is ChatGPT accurate for translation?

We didn’t test it, so we can’t give it a score. OpenAI itself says ChatGPT can give wrong answers while sounding sure of them, and suggests using its answers as a first draft, not as a final source. For anything important, ask someone who speaks the language to check it.

Is ChatGPT better than Google Translate or DeepL?

We didn’t compare their quality, but they offer different things. In ChatGPT, you can choose the tone, ask about slang and get explanations. Google Translate covers almost 250 languages, and Google has added its Gemini AI to it for idioms and slang, starting in the US and India. DeepL lists 100+ languages and has a free plan with a monthly limit. For important documents, have a person who speaks the language check the result.

Can ChatGPT translate WhatsApp messages?

Not inside your chats. You can copy a message into ChatGPT and copy the answer back. In the European Economic Area, you can also message ChatGPT as a WhatsApp contact (1-800-ChatGPT), but it still doesn’t translate your chats with other people. WhatsApp has its own Translate: tap and hold a message, then tap ⋮ > Translate on Android or More… > Translate on iPhone. It can’t translate your reply, and it isn’t in WhatsApp Business. To read and reply without copying, Swift Translate translates WhatsApp chats on your screen. See also how to translate WhatsApp messages.

Is there a ChatGPT translator app?

OpenAI’s ChatGPT app for Android and iPhone translates in its chats and with Voice. ChatGPT Translate itself is a web page that you open in a browser. Other apps with “ChatGPT” or “GPT” in their names aren’t necessarily made by OpenAI, so check the developer before you install one.

If you translate a text now and then, ChatGPT may be all you need. If you translate messages and comments all day, Swift Translate translates them in the apps where you read them, with one bubble.
