What a Quarter of a Million People Translate Every Month
The short answer: we looked at Swift Translate’s anonymized usage data — hundreds of thousands of monthly users, roughly 9.7 million translations a week — to see where translation actually happens on a phone. The result: chat dominates, WhatsApp is bigger than everything else, TikTok is the surprise runner-up, and AI chat is the fastest-growing category.
(Method note: these are aggregate counts of which app was on screen when a translation happened. No message content is collected or stored — we can see that a translation happened in WhatsApp, never what it said.)

Five things the data says
1. Translation is a chat feature, not a travel feature. Translator apps are marketed with menus and street signs. The reality: the overwhelming majority of translation happens inside conversations. People don’t translate a sentence — they translate a relationship: a partner, a customer, a family group.
2. WhatsApp is the center of the multilingual world. Nearly 6 million translations a month across WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. The Business half is its own story: small sellers answering customers across borders, every day.
3. TikTok is quietly a translation giant. 1.4 million translations a month — more than Telegram or Instagram. TikTok pushes videos across borders, and the context lives in the comments, so the comments get translated.
4. AI chat is the fastest-growing category. ChatGPT translation usage grew about 27% in five months in our data. People write prompts in their language, send them in English, and translate the answers back — getting English-level AI quality without English.
5. The long tail is enormous. Beyond the big names, translations happen in thousands of different apps every month: games, manga readers, dating apps, marketplaces, note apps. Once translation is one drag away, people translate everywhere.
