The short answer: On Android, WhatsApp can auto translate a chat: translate one message, then choose to translate all new messages in that chat. On iPhone it translates one message at a time, and on both it can’t translate a reply before you send it and isn’t in WhatsApp Business. How to turn on auto translate in WhatsApp
On Android
WhatsApp’s automatic translation is part of its normal Translate menu. You turn it on for one chat at a time.
- Open the chat and tap and hold a message in the other person’s language.
- Tap ⋮ (More options) > Translate.
- Choose the language you want the messages translated to or from. WhatsApp downloads it the first time.
- Tap Continue > Translate.
- Choose the option to translate all new messages in the chat.

On iPhone
On iPhone, WhatsApp translates one message at a time: tap and hold a message, then tap More… > Translate. There is no option to translate a whole chat. WhatsApp has been working on automatic translation for iPhone, but it hasn’t announced a date.

What WhatsApp’s auto translate doesn’t do
If you’re on Android, both languages are on the list and you only need to read, turn it on for that chat and you’re done.
It stops in a few places:
- Your reply. WhatsApp translates messages that are already in the chat. It can’t write your reply in their language. Its writing help can change how a message sounds (Rephrase, Professional, Funny, Supportive, Proofread), but translation isn’t one of the options.
- WhatsApp Business. Translate isn’t in the Business app, so a shop that answers customers in other languages gets neither single messages nor whole chats translated.
- iPhone. One message at a time, and nothing automatic.
- Languages. The list is limited and differs between Android and iPhone. If one of your two languages is missing, WhatsApp can’t translate the chat.
Auto translate and reply with Swift Translate
Chat mode on Android: the chat in your language, in real time
Swift Translate’s Chat mode works inside WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. You turn it on once in Swift Translate, under Settings › Chat apps › WhatsApp. After that:
- A chat icon appears when you open a conversation. Tap it and the conversation opens in a panel, translated into your language.
- New messages are translated as they arrive while the panel is open. Group chats work too.
- Swift Translate detects the contact’s language and remembers it for that contact. You can change it if it’s wrong.
- Turn on Auto and the panel opens by itself whenever you open that chat.
- The reply bar translates what you type into the contact’s language and sends it in WhatsApp. It also shows your message translated back into your language, so you can check the meaning first.
Chat mode works the same way in Instagram DMs.
Reply in their language with the bubble
The floating bubble works in any chat, with or without Chat mode:
- Type your reply in your own language in WhatsApp’s message box.
- Drag the Swift Translate bubble onto your text.
- Check the translation on the preview card, then tap Send, or tap Edit to change it.
The message goes out in the language you chose for them. If you want the other person to see your own words too, turn on Include original text in Swift Translate’s Settings. WhatsApp Business
WhatsApp’s Translate isn’t in the Business app, but Swift Translate’s bubble, the reply and Chat mode all work there. On iPhone: Swift Translate Keyboard
Swift Translate Keyboard doesn’t translate chats automatically, but it covers both directions in over 100 languages:
- Reply: type your message, switch to Swift Translate Keyboard and tap Translate. Your text changes to the language you chose for them. Tap WhatsApp’s Send. Edit brings your own words back.
- Read: copy a message and tap Paste on the keyboard. The translation appears above the keys.
